NACLC Seeks New Communications Manager
Make a positive contribution to the work of a peak body, the National Association of Community Legal Centres (NACLC), dedicated to ensuring a thriving community legal sector and improving access to justice for people across Australia.
The Communications Manager will join a small dynamic team to lead, develop and implement all communications, media and digital engagement work for NACLC, as well as for knowmore.

Who Are We?
The National Association of Community Legal Centres (NACLC) is the national peak body for the community legal sector. The community legal sector nationally is made up of almost 200 community-based legal services that take client-centred, trauma informed and systemic approaches to legal service delivery. NACLC’s members are the eight State and Territory Community Legal Centre Associations.
NACLC has a new Strategic Plan and Priorities and is seeking a Communications Manager who will conduct a review of existing communications and develop and implement changes to maximise impact.
NACLC also auspices knowmore, a free legal service established to provide advice and support to people engaging with the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, and moving forward in relation to the National Redress Scheme for Survivors of Institutional Child Sexual Abuse.
Key Duties and Accountabilities
- Act as a strategic communications adviser, providing high-level strategic advice to the Board, CEO and Executive Team of NACLC; as well as knowmore.
- Develop and implement a new NACLC Communications and Media Strategy as well as campaign strategies, including monitoring and evaluation.
- Develop and implement a Communications and Media Strategy for knowmore.
- Develop and execute campaigns, strategies and advocacy initiatives that build the profile of, and a broad support base for, the community legal sector.
- Develop and refine branding, messaging/narrative, and oversee message testing to ensure effective core communications work and campaigning, including reaching new audiences, increasing engagement and influencing decision-makers.
- Review and better develop mechanisms for engagement, consultation and information sharing with State and Territory CLC Associations and the community legal sector.
- Work with traditional media, including building relationships and networks with journalists and media outlets, pitching stories and identifying and maximising media opportunities.
- Manage and develop social media (twitter, facebook etc), website (including redesign and content generation) and campaigning databases and tools.
- Work collaboratively with State and Territory CLC Associations, individual sector representatives and other legal assistance providers to develop and achieve common advocacy goals.
- Plan, write, edit and coordinate content for NACLC and knowmore publications and materials, including regular e-newsletters, the Annual Report and campaign materials.
- Oversee the effective engagement of consultants, volunteers and interns.
- Undertake other duties as directed by the NACLC CEO, NACLC Director Policy and Advocacy and knowmore Executive Officer.
You ideally have:
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Initiative and the ability to work independently to drive innovative communications approaches and strategies.
- High-level ability to guide and lead strategic communications thinking and planning.
- A proactive and ‘can’ do attitude.
- The ability to be flexible and work effectively in a small team with limited support and respond and easily adjust to changing work demands and multiple priorities.
- A collaborative and consultative way of working, including the ability to work collaboratively to achieve common communications and advocacy goals.
- The skills and ability to manage a wide range of projects and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated understanding of social change and campaign theories and implementation.
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice and human rights, as well as working collaboratively and respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities and others.
- Tertiary qualification in communications, public relations, journalism or similar, and/or significant professional work experience in these fields.
- Senior experience working in a communications, engagement, campaigns or advocacy role(s).
- Demonstrated skills and experience in developing and implementing high-level communications and media strategies, including a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and refining branding, messaging and narrative to ensure effective core communications work and campaigning.
- High-level stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and communicate, liaise and build productive relationships with a wide range of people to achieve common communications and advocacy goals.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in working in or with traditional media, including pitching stories to journalists and media outlets and generating media coverage as well as effectively using new/social media.
- Confidence with information technology, including websites, CRMs and bulk email software.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare high-quality materials tailored to a variety of audiences.
- Experience working with or in community/non-profit organisations and/or member-based organisations
Working at NACLC
NACLC provides a diverse and inclusive workplace. NACLC also provides a family and carer friendly environment where employees are able to access flexible work hours subject to operational requirements. NACLC’s main office is located in the Sydney CBD and general office hours are 9 am – 5 pm. Employees may be required to work outside of these office hours and travel interstate on occasions.
The terms and conditions of employment of NACLC and knowmore staff are governed by the NACLC Enterprise Agreement 2016-2020, which is based on the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010, and the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth).
NACLC offers salary packaging through a third party salary packaging provider, which incurs a small annual membership fee payable by staff who elect to receive salary packaging.
- This position is classified as a Grade 5/6 under the SCHADS Award.
- The salary range for the position is $74,000-$85,000 (negotiable) plus 10% superannuation and salary packaging.
- A probationary period of 3 months applies.
