The Northern Rivers CLC's Aboriginal Legal Access Program (ALAP) has a weekly radio show on 88.9fm Richmond Valley Radio. The show features Indigenous music, and legal and other relevant information. 88.9fm is a community radio station situated at Bora Ridge with a large listening base derived from the local Aboriginal communities. The Centre started the program in mid November 2011 and has so far featured NRCLC services, domestic violence, human rights, youth legal issues and family law and children. This DVD assists people to access advocacy and legal assistance from the Darwin Community Legal Service. It provides a pragmatic explanation aimed at Indigenous people and demystifies the process for gaining assistance. This DVD has proven popular with our remote clients and we hope to make it available in other Indigenous languages in the future. DCLS would welcome partnerships with other organisations to make this happen. |

Illawarra Legal Centre used Seniors Week to remind older people about planning ahead by highlighting issues such as making a will, appointing an attorney and guardian, and Centrelink entitlements and aged pensions. The Centre’s Welfare Rights Advocate and a solicitor co-presented an hour-long session on community radio, followed by a Q&A format. An information stall was also held in Wollongong Mall. |

The Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention & Legal Service Victoria (FVPLS Victoria) is launching the Standing Firm against Family Violence campaign to raise awareness on family violence and empower Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander women to look after themselves and stand firm against family violence. The campaign, which will use video, also aims to provide positive reinforcement of messages of resilience and self-care and strengthen networks to better assist victims and survivors of family violence. The DVD and workbook were developed to provide culturally sensitive and appropriate visual and audio aids to assist with the delivery of education about domestic and family violence. It was developed in close consultation with senior members of the Central Australia Aboriginal Community. The end result was a locally relevant education tool, which incorporates local Aboriginal and colloquial English language to educate people about Australian law but which also respects and acknowledges Aboriginal law and empowers people to make their own choices about their actions. |

Young people from diverse backgrounds in Melbourne have experienced significant alienation stemming from the fear evoked in media representations and have subsequently faced intensified police attention and increased justice system intervention. In 2011 SMLS undertook the Visioning Justice Project, which worked with a small group of these young people. Participants received comprehensive radio production and legal education training. Participants then produced a series of radio documentaries discussing the law, policing and the criminal justice system, including their own experiences and ideas for change. What's the law? has been developed by legal aid commissions for use in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP). AMEP provide 510 hours of free English language classes to newly arrived migrants and refugees. The kit can also be used in other classroom and community settings. The kit features a DVD that is based on the concept in Getting to know the law in my new country, created by Footscray CLC in 2009-10 for AMEP classes in Victoria.
