2. Anti-Terrorism Laws: A Guide for Affected Communities

The project developed a community legal education kit for Australian communities affected by the anti-terror laws.

The kit focuses on aspects of the laws relevant to the everyday activities of domestic communities. In particular, it is intended to build the community members' knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities in relation to ASIO and the Australian Federal Police.

The kit uses a train-the-trainer model, allowing for the delivery of legal education by recognised and trusted community leaders.

3. Boarders & Lodgers Law Reform

A campaign to introduce legislation to cover boarders and lodgers in NSW.

The campaign involved submissions to politicians, engaging in policy debate, running test cases at the CTTT (eg on the definition of boarders and lodgers as exclusions to the Residential Tenancy Act 2010, or to have boarders and lodgers covered by the General Division of the CTTT), and the development of a Legal Remedies Kit that highlights the inadequacy of current remedies for boarders and lodgers.

Provision of a CLE session for Koori Health Workers in the East Gippsland area. The event was held in Lakes Entrance as part of the Health worker' professional development program.

5. Community BBQ

This event focused on raising awareness against family violence and support services available for Koori victims/survivors. A presentation was provided about FVPLS services and a special presentation was given by Lani Brenan telling her story as an Aboriginal survivor of family violence.

In partnership with 10 organisations, Peninsula CLC has helped develop this project for new arrivals in Frankston. Based on principles of community development, the project comprises an 11 week education program (with interpreters) to help new arrivals understand road laws and form links with local agencies.

9. Driving in Western Australia workshops

10. Elder Abuse - Family Agreements

Northern Suburbs CLC's specialist legal service, the Older Peoples Rights Service, found that approximately 70% of their elder abuse cases involved Family Agreements.


The CLC conducted 23 workshops and offered community education on elder abuse: “Family Agreements and Elder Abuse”.

These sessions complemented the recently released topic sheet “Family Agreements: Knowing your Rights and responsibilities”, jointly produced publication with the Department for Communities.

12. Elephant in your room?

Barwon Community Legal Service took a large fibreglass elephant on a three-month tour of its catchment area to raise awareness about family violence.

It combined the tour with various CLE events over the 90 days (Stop Violence Against Women - Month of Action, White Ribbon Day, Human Rights Day etc).

About the Elephant

She started life in Wodonga in 2009 as a community art project and was produced by a group of women who have survived living with family violence. She has been beautifully decorated in two halves. The left hand side is black and white and depicts the downside of abuse and the devastation it causes to people's lives. The right hand side is colourful and depicts the upside and joy...

13. Employment Law Update

This seminar was presented to community workers as part of the Hunter Community Legal Centre's CLE program. It covers employment law institutions, national employment standards, EBAs, discrimination and unfair dismissal.

14. Engaging in the CEDAW review process

Kingsford Legal Centre delivered training over Webex for the Australian Women Against Violence Alliance (AWAVA) on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

The training focused on Australia's review under CEDAW and violence against women.

It is part of AWAVA's work on coordinating the NGO Follow Up Report to CEDAW.
