1. Advocacy Indigenous DVD

This DVD assists people to access advocacy and legal assistance from the Darwin Community Legal Service. It provides a pragmatic explanation aimed at Indigenous people and demystifies the process for gaining assistance.

This DVD has proven popular with our remote clients and we hope to make it available in other Indigenous languages in the future. DCLS would welcome partnerships with other organisations to make this happen.

2. Age and Disability Discrimination

The Disability Discrimination Act and Age Discrimination Act aim to protect particularly vulnerable people in our community. In this session, Marrickville Legal Centre explores how people may be treated less favourably on the grounds of a disability or their age in many areas of life, including employment and access to goods and services.

The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) investigates complaints of discrimination and helps the parties to discuss resolution of complaints. This seminar informs participants about current issues in discrimination law, and shows them how to support clients who may have discrimination complaints and how complaints are resolved through conciliation.

Based on the Victoria Legal Aid/Youthlaw booklet Am I Old Enough?, this quiz is a good icebreaker to convey the range of ways the law impacts young people's lives. In most cases it has been conducted as a 'call out' activity in a big group, with chocolates given for correct answers and discussion in between. It could also be run as a 'game show' or produced as a handout.

4. Animal Welfare Legal Issues

Northern Rivers CLC held a community forum to gauge interest in animal welfare legal issues that resulted in the formation of the volunteer-based Animal Law & Education Project (ALEP).

ALEP is comprised of lawyers, law students and animal carers and engages in community education and law reform activities.

ALEP lobbied the local Southern Cross University Law School to offer an Animal Law unit over the summer semester.

ALEP held a community forum on animal protection laws and partnered with Southern Cross University’s Animal Law unit academics to run the Animal Law Conference ‘The Road Ahead’, which addressed the shortfalls in legal protections for animals.

5. Anti Poverty Week Lunch

The Illawarra Legal Centre collaborated with Wollongong TAFE students to host a lunch with a difference to mark anti-poverty week. A few students were pleasantly surprised when they were seated at the "banquet" table. However, many only received a small bowl of rice and had to look on! Everyone gained some insight into world poverty.

7. Anti-Terrorism Laws: A Guide for Affected Communities

The project developed a community legal education kit for Australian communities affected by the anti-terror laws.

The kit focuses on aspects of the laws relevant to the everyday activities of domestic communities. In particular, it is intended to build the community members' knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities in relation to ASIO and the Australian Federal Police.

The kit uses a train-the-trainer model, allowing for the delivery of legal education by recognised and trusted community leaders.

8. Ask LOIS

Ask LOIS is a secure member only website for community workers in NSW who are responding to domestic and family violence. Ask LOIS provides workers with online training via webinars (online seminars), access to resources, case studies and discussion forums.

Designed for use by service providers and educators, this is a kit with activities, plain English handouts, resources, background information and facilitators notes including structured sample session outlines. The kit was developed as part of the CALD communities project after consultation and collaboration with community members, leaders and service providers.

11. Being a Support Person for a Young Person

This workshop is for youth workers and covers being a 'Support Person' for a young person at the police station, including the role of a Support Person sitting in on a police interview, as well as supporting a young person at court.

We provided a 3-hour workshop to a Chin Women's group on tenancy rights and obligations and home purchase. The workshop was part of a Financial Literacy Program run by Women's Health West.

18. CLE to 12 Darkinjung tenants

A session about how to challenge excessive rent increases. The session covered the tenants' rights and obligations under the residential tenancy agreement; the function and process of the Consumer, Trader & Tenancy tribunals; tips and strategies when attending the tribunal; tips on negotiating in the Conciliation room when dealing with an agent and/or landlord.

They also covered how to fill in an application to CTTT. All tenants had successful outcomes when disputing their increases at Tribunal.

19. Climate Change Law

The EDO is undertaking a number of activities to ensure climate change laws are effective in tackling climate change and will not lead to negative environmental outcomes.

The main laws are the Carbon Farming Initiative legislation, Victorian Climate Change Act and proposed Federal carbon price.

Activities include assisting the community and peak environment groups to understand the proposed laws so that they can effectively engage with government on their development, making law reform submissions to government and holding public education forums.

In partnership with 10 organisations, Peninsula CLC has helped develop this project for new arrivals in Frankston. Based on principles of community development, the project comprises an 11 week education program (with interpreters) to help new arrivals understand road laws and form links with local agencies.
