In Queensland, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child is breached every day as 17 year olds are charged and imprisoned as adults. The Castaway campaign highlights that young people have the responsibilities of adults without the rights of adults, so they are legal castaways. The project will facilitate 100 young people to write 100 individual messages to be placed in a bottle and sent to 100 community leaders as a "message in a bottle." The campaign will also be supported by social media. |

The EDO is undertaking a number of activities to ensure climate change laws are effective in tackling climate change and will not lead to negative environmental outcomes. The main laws are the Carbon Farming Initiative legislation, Victorian Climate Change Act and proposed Federal carbon price. Activities include assisting the community and peak environment groups to understand the proposed laws so that they can effectively engage with government on their development, making law reform submissions to government and holding public education forums. |

Legal aid commissions, community legal centres and the private legal profession are key members of Australia's access to justice sector. Together, these organisations have made various forms of legal information, advice and assistance available to many Australians. The access to justice sector now faces a range of challenges - some new, some old, some local, some global. This panel discussion on 10 May 2013 brings together policy makers, practitioners and researchers to discuss how those concerned with access to justice can constructively work together to respond to these challenges. Panel members include:

Kingsford Legal Centre made a submission to the Attorney-General’s Department on its draft National Human Rights Action Plan. The Plan is the Australian Government’s main response to the National Human Rights Consultation. In addition to commenting on specific actions, we expressed our concern about the lack of broader policy goals and measurable performance indicators in the Plan. We also wrote to the NSW Attorney-General to express our concern about the absence of any actions from NSW within the Plan. |

The campaign informs people about the myths around pay day lending and encourages individuals and community organisations to take action. It is based on research findings that demonstrate that high cost loans exploit vulnerable consumers. The campaign encourages submissions to the parliamentary inquiries considering proposed legislation that will cap the interest on payday loans. The Consumer Credit and Corporations Legislation Amendment (Enhancements) Bill 2011 (the BIll) is being investigated by two committees; the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial and the Senate Economics Committee. |

A project that has drawn on a coalition of community legal centres, with Kingsford Legal Centre leading the coalition. Kingsford hopes to make a submission to the Federal Attorney-General’s Department that will look at the current issues CLCs experience with using the Federal discrimination laws and suggest alternative ways of framing anti-discrimination law to enable more systemic changes and improve outcomes for CLC clients. |

The Grandparents, Grandchildren and Family Law project encourages grandparents to be confident and informed and to contribute positively to the care, welfare and development of their grandchildren, whether or not the parents of the children are separated or divorced. A Reference Group was established with industry experts (eg Victoria Legal Aid, CO-ASIT - Italian Agency, private practitioners, Aged Care Services - Moreland Council). Racial and Religious Discrimination, Vilification and Harassment: A community development project of the Western Suburbs Legal Service (2006) reported on research undertaken by WSLS into the extent and experience of systemic and interpersonal racism in the Western suburbs. It outlines the ways in which international and domestic law deals with discrimination complaints and examines complaint processes in practice. The report also makes a number of recommendations for community-based responses to racism. |

JobWatch argues that whilst the Fair Work Act is a vast improvement on the previous WorkChoices legislation, many workers, particularly the most vulnerable, continue to be at risk of exploitation. The Fair Work Act could be improved in a number of respects in order to provide a fairer and more equitable framework for Australian workplace relations. The focus of our submission is on the questions regarding General Protections and Unfair Dismissal. We have also made some brief comments on the issues of flexible working arrangements, the educative role of the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) and on the use of enforceable undertakings as an alternative to prosecution. |
