The NT Law Handbook is an easy-to-read guide to law in the Northern Territory. This approach to providing the community with plain language information on a comprehensive range of legal topics has been developed by AustLII, the NT Legal Aid Commission and the Darwin Community Legal Service, with the support of the Law Society of the Northern Territory Public Purposes Trust. To celebrate Law Week this year we were out in our community offering free legal health checks and a shot in our blizzard machine to win instant prizes. A legal health check is a conversation starter to help people identify their legal problems and get help. There was an opportunity for community members to have a one–on–one chat with a legal professional and also take away resources to read at home. We ran six successful days of events in three locations, spending time at Bellarine Village in Newcomb, Colac Woolworths and Market Square in Geelong and spoke to over 1200 people.

The project is a creative youth participation project designed to inform, educate and encourage young people concerning the societal impacts of their behaviour in organising or attending parties.

10. Folk Law CD and Songbook

The CD contains 18 original songs about common legal problems; shopping, renting, credit, buying cars, driving, bulling, police, courts, family violence, work rights, dispute resolution and discrimination. The history of law, democracy, human rights and citizenship are also covered.

The Songbook contains song lyrics and chords for ukulele and guitar plus key information about the law and basic music theory. The songs cover a range popular music styles – reggae, rap, rock, folk, funk, soul, ska, cha cha cha, blues, country, calypso, klezmer, gospel and jazz. The songs can also be read as poems or rapped.

Hunter Community Legal Centre set up a hula hoop making stall at a family fun day in early 2014. Hunter CLC staff were on hand to help with hoop assembly and decoration advice. While the children were occupied, parents were able to take a legal health test to help them identify any legal issues they might be having and receive some free legal information.

Barwon CLS ran running a tenancy promo at Deakin University during March 2014. We designed a special cardboard house to raise awareness around rights and renting. There were be tenancy quiz with questions and lots of free noodles and recipe sheets (to pimp up your noodles) to win!
