Many culturally connected Aboriginal communities span the Northern Territory/Western Australia border. Different laws apply on each side of the border, which can create confusion about the law for local Aboriginal people. The aim of Blurred Borders is to produce resource kits for legal and community service providers working with Aboriginal people in the NT/WA cross-border region. The resource kits use visual art and storytelling to help explain, in a culturally accessible way, the key legal concepts around bail and the criminal process, and family violence. These resources are also helpful for non-Aboriginal people and have been used with CALD individuals and those with cognitive impairments.

The NT Law Handbook is an easy-to-read guide to law in the Northern Territory. This approach to providing the community with plain language information on a comprehensive range of legal topics has been developed by AustLII, the NT Legal Aid Commission and the Darwin Community Legal Service, with the support of the Law Society of the Northern Territory Public Purposes Trust. 5. Cycle of Violence - Family Violence Resource Kit

This resource kit aims to improve Yolŋu understanding of the dynamics of family violence using a unique metaphor developed in partnership with Yolŋu – traditional knowledge about the cycle of the seasons. The resources encourage people to reflect on what action they can take to keep their children and families safe. To celebrate Law Week this year we were out in our community offering free legal health checks and a shot in our blizzard machine to win instant prizes. A legal health check is a conversation starter to help people identify their legal problems and get help. There was an opportunity for community members to have a one–on–one chat with a legal professional and also take away resources to read at home. We ran six successful days of events in three locations, spending time at Bellarine Village in Newcomb, Colac Woolworths and Market Square in Geelong and spoke to over 1200 people.

On Saturday 12 November, Barwon Community Legal Service joined staff from Bethany Community Support, Diversitat, City of Greater Geelong and a bunch of young people to stop traffic in Geelong CBD between Market Square and Westfield Shopping Centres. The group surprised unassuming shoppers with a Flash Mob dance in the street that was aimed at raising awareness about respect and healthy relationships. This Flash Mob community campaign is one of many events being run as part of the Barwon Month of Action to Stop Men’s Violence Against Women. www.monthofaction.com.au

We ended 2015 on a high with a sell out event, with local community workers attending an interactive and informative session – The Court Experience: Family Violence, Intervention Orders and Victims Compensation.

The aim of the forum was to provide workers with a greater understanding of the Court process and how to support clients with family violence matters.

As part of the event BCLS hosted the Western CLC November NoViolence plays to introduce the various types of family violence.
