People in remote indigenous communities experience barriers entering into the workforce as a result of the Working with Children legislation. The reason is that much of the available work is with government agencies and NGO's and it is in the social services area, where "Blue Cards" are a typical job requirement. People in indigenous communities tend to have significantly more substantial criminal records than the average "mainstream" individual. The strict Blue Card regime is therefore often a barrier in obtaining work. The CLC with our local member of parliament to amend the legislation by introducing a community specific Blue Card.

The NT Law Handbook is an easy-to-read guide to law in the Northern Territory. This approach to providing the community with plain language information on a comprehensive range of legal topics has been developed by AustLII, the NT Legal Aid Commission and the Darwin Community Legal Service, with the support of the Law Society of the Northern Territory Public Purposes Trust. 4. Legal Health Check POP UP shops!

To celebrate Law Week this year we were out in our community offering free legal health checks and a shot in our blizzard machine to win instant prizes. A legal health check is a conversation starter to help people identify their legal problems and get help. There was an opportunity for community members to have a one–on–one chat with a legal professional and also take away resources to read at home. We ran six successful days of events in three locations, spending time at Bellarine Village in Newcomb, Colac Woolworths and Market Square in Geelong and spoke to over 1200 people.

9. Workplace Rights for Teens

This project aims to inform senior high school students about their rights, entitlements and responsibilities at work. The project was delivered by a solicitor from the Mackay Regional Community Legal Centre (MRCLC) at high schools in the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac Regional areas.

The students were informed about modern awards, the National Employment Standards (NES), the duties and obligations owed to an employer, pay, finishing up or termination of employment, unfair dismissal, harassment, discrimination, workplace bullying and where to get assistance.

10. CAWLS Website Translation Project

CAWLS received funding from the NT Law Society Public Purposes Trust to translate basic legal information on our website into a range of Indigenous and non-Indigenous languages. The translations are a combination of audio and written content.

11. Sisters in Law radio program

13. Folk Law CD and Songbook

The CD contains 18 original songs about common legal problems; shopping, renting, credit, buying cars, driving, bulling, police, courts, family violence, work rights, dispute resolution and discrimination. The history of law, democracy, human rights and citizenship are also covered.

The Songbook contains song lyrics and chords for ukulele and guitar plus key information about the law and basic music theory. The songs cover a range popular music styles – reggae, rap, rock, folk, funk, soul, ska, cha cha cha, blues, country, calypso, klezmer, gospel and jazz. The songs can also be read as poems or rapped.

Four music clips have been made.
