2. Anti-Poverty Week Lunch

Barwon Community Legal Service wanted to promote discussion and action about poverty in Australia and around the world.

We marked Anti-Poverty Week 2010 by organising a free community BBQ at our local Salvation Army.

People were given the opportunity to record concerns/issues that keep people in poverty and/or sign template letters relating to local issues. These letters were sent to local MPs and the event attracted local media.

3. Bar coasters to promote community legal service

Aim: to promote the Illawarra Legal Centre to the wider community, and in particular to target males by producing disposable bar coasters with simple messages and contact details.

Method: coasters delivered to 20 licensed premises (hotels and clubs) in the Illawarra region.

4. Boarders & Lodgers Law Reform

A campaign to introduce legislation to cover boarders and lodgers in NSW.

The campaign involved submissions to politicians, engaging in policy debate, running test cases at the CTTT (eg on the definition of boarders and lodgers as exclusions to the Residential Tenancy Act 2010, or to have boarders and lodgers covered by the General Division of the CTTT), and the development of a Legal Remedies Kit that highlights the inadequacy of current remedies for boarders and lodgers.

5. Calling All Tenants

The Tenants Union of Tasmania created a website and produced a TV Advertisement with the help of volunteers. WIN screen it for free as a Community Service Announcement.

6. CLC4GV Campaign

The Goulburn Valley has no permanent CLC, only a Pilot service in Shepparton (with limited local outreach) managed by Loddon Campaspe CLC based in Bendigo. Effectively, the Goulburn Valley, which has demonstrable disadvantage and need, is a CLC blackspot. Accordingly, the CLC4GV Campaign aims to

  • urge governments to fund a permanent CLC in the region
  • promote the Goulburn Valley CLC Pilot, and
  • promote the value of CLCs in the region

7. Climate Change Act

The EDO worked to improve the design of the Climate Change Act before it was introduced in 2010, and then to prevent the State Government winding it back in 2011-12.

8. Climate Change Law

The EDO is undertaking a number of activities to ensure climate change laws are effective in tackling climate change and will not lead to negative environmental outcomes.

The main laws are the Carbon Farming Initiative legislation, Victorian Climate Change Act and proposed Federal carbon price.

Activities include assisting the community and peak environment groups to understand the proposed laws so that they can effectively engage with government on their development, making law reform submissions to government and holding public education forums.

9. Coastal Management Reform

Campaign in response to government failure to deliver State Coastal Policy, urging development of a comprehensive coastal management framework

10. Dealing with Fines Debt

The Illawarra Legal Centre wrote submissions, undertook advocacy work and developed educational resources on Fines and Work and Development Orders (WDO) outlining legislative and policy changes that reduce or eliminate fines debt and worked for improvements to these changes.

The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) sheets and wallet cards for young people are the basis of educational sessions and law reform work.

Work and Development Orders (WDO) were a key feature of the changes to the Fines Act and at the heart of our lobbying and advocacy work.

11. Driving in Western Australia video

12. Elephant in your room?

Barwon Community Legal Service took a large fibreglass elephant on a three-month tour of its catchment area to raise awareness about family violence.

It combined the tour with various CLE events over the 90 days (Stop Violence Against Women - Month of Action, White Ribbon Day, Human Rights Day etc).

About the Elephant

She started life in Wodonga in 2009 as a community art project and was produced by a group of women who have survived living with family violence. She has been beautifully decorated in two halves. 13. End the Payday Debt Trap

The campaign informs people about the myths around pay day lending and encourages individuals and community organisations to take action. It is based on research findings that demonstrate that high cost loans exploit vulnerable consumers.

The campaign encourages submissions to the parliamentary inquiries considering proposed legislation that will cap the interest on payday loans.

The Consumer Credit and Corporations Legislation Amendment (Enhancements) Bill 2011 (the BIll) is being investigated by two committees; the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial and the Senate Economics Committee.

15. Law Week Quiz

In 2012 Eastern CLC is holding a 'virtual' event for Law Week, with a media campaign in local papers, mailouts to partner agencies and a social media campaign.

The focus of the campaign is on the wide range of life issues the law impacts, encourgaing people to recognise the legal knowledge they already have and emphasising the positive impact legal advice can make.

The campaign uses a Legal Quiz - multiple choice questions on common legal issues in our community.

17. Older people and planning ahead

Illawarra Legal Centre used Seniors Week to remind older people about planning ahead by highlighting issues such as making a will, appointing an attorney and guardian, and Centrelink entitlements and aged pensions. The Centre’s Welfare Rights Advocate and a solicitor co-presented an hour-long session on community radio, followed by a Q&A format. An information stall was also held in Wollongong Mall.

19. Reducing Domestic Violence in Minority Communities

Members of minority communities (LGBTIQ, Indigenous people, people with a disability, newly immigrated) are significantly less likely to report domestic and family violence or seek professional assistance. Midland Information Debt and Legal Advocacy Service (MIDLAS) seeks to improve access and availability to services for victims of domestic violence.

20. Reforming Mining Law in Victoria

The EDO (Vic.) is running a long-term law reform project aimed at improving Victoria's mining laws to better protect the environment, sensitive land uses and regional communities from mining (especially for coal and coal seam gas).
