The Grandparents, Grandchildren and Family Law project encourages grandparents to be confident and informed and to contribute positively to the care, welfare and development of their grandchildren, whether or not the parents of the children are separated or divorced. Focus groups and community information sessions were conducted with Melbourne's Greek Community. A Reference Group was established with industry experts (eg Victoria Legal Aid, CO-ASIT - Italian Agency, private practitioners, Aged Care Services - Moreland Council). Integrated social welfare/criminal justice response to domestic violence in partnership with three NSW Police Local Area Commands from which we receive "yellow card" referrals for people experiencing DV (mostly women) and provide follow up support, information and referrals to them via the telephone, after doing safety and risk assessment and safety plan. Typical referrals include DVCAS (court support), counselling, family law, Victims Compensation, other legal advice, financial support, refuges and accommodation. Kingsford Legal Centre’s Housing Repairs Campaign seeks to improve the standard of housing for clients living in Housing NSW properties. The campaign uses a number of different strategies. We are working with our local communities to raise awareness about the issue and empower clients to make complaints to Housing NSW and the Tenancy Tribunal through workshops, advice clinics and articles in community newsletters. We are placing pressure on Housing NSW through our casework, in particular focusing on increasing complaints to the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunals (CTTT) and exploring other legal options, such as discrimination complaints. These Community Legal Education (CLE) sessions were delivered in Forster-Taree to older persons and members of the Aboriginal Communities. This outreach CLE was triggered by a client contacting the TARS Advice Line with a query about planning for later life. The sessions covered wills, powers of attorney and guardianship. |

Reform of law covering marginal renters in NSW. Marginal renters include people living in boarding houses, crisis accommodation, student accommodation and share housing. Paper launched in March 2011 calling for law reform, accomodation provider sustainability, social inclusion programs and reform of Licensed Residential Centres for people with a disability. The campaign involves submissions to politicians, engaging in policy debate, facilitation of round table, stakeholder consultations, promotion of best practice, liaison with bureaucrats and local government, gaining over 30 organisational signatories in support of reform, facilitating media coverage and conducting research. |

Roma Mitchell Human Rights Volunteer Service (RMHRVS) is dedicated to the pro-active advance of human rights under a long term goal of securing these rights through constitutional change. Some prior volunteer and e-vols activities have included writing reports and submissions, the researching of background material, emailing organisations, politicians and other persons. This ongoing project uses video, public events and the internet. |

This project facilitated the implementation and utilisation of the new Guardianship and Administration Act 2010 to ensure that family and friends of missing persons can access accurate and useful information about their legal options regarding administration of the missing person’s affairs. It will also ensure that the staff at key agencies helping families and friends of missing persons (eg missing person’s support groups, Victoria Police and VCAT) are informed about the new options available. The guide assists families and friends of missing persons to manage the financial and legal difficulties created when a loved one goes missing. |

socialneeds.net.au provides an easily navigable and searchable directory of key reports and submissions concerning social needs in Australia since 2007, with an emphasis on those released in the last 4 years. Each of over 500 reports and submissions can be directly accessed through the directory by clicking on the report or submission name. Relevant reports can be identified by text or tag search and be sorted by name, author, date, description or tag. The directory also contains a brief description of the organisations that have authored the reports and a link to their home page. |
