The Aboriginal housing sector is undergoing significant, complex and contested reforms. With direction from the Aboriginal Tenants Advice Network and in collaboration with Shelter NSW and NCOSS, the TU commissioned a review of the current reforms and future directions. The report was released February 2011 and it received coverage in sector newsletters. We met with Aboriginal housing organisations to discuss the outcomes and published an update to the research. We also participated in the National Indigenous Housing Roundtable. The resulting document is being used by the Aboriginal services to respond to the reforms and as an education tool for non-Aboriginal services.

The purpose of the ‘Act for the House, not the Tenant’ Project is to target rental properties which are in a state of disrepair in order to encourage tenants to take enforcement action against the landlord. The Project plans to approach tenants in around 20 properties, previously identified as substandard, over an 18 month period. Footscray CLC would offer to assist the tenant in enforcing the repairs procedures in the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 (Vic), and applying for compensation as appropriate. The Project ultimately aims to document the outcome of repeated enforcement action against ‘repeat offender’ landlords. |

ActivistRights.org.au has been an important resource for activists in Victoria since 2006. Thanks to funding from the Victoria Law Foundation, the contribution of legal workers, activists, and writers, and the support of the RMIT Human Right Education Unit, the Fitzroy Legal Service will be relaunching an updated site in May 2012. As part of the relaunch, Fitzroy Legal Service will host an event including a panel, debate and entertainment. The panel will include Rob Stary, Tasneem Chopra and Gary Foley, who will discuss “Activism in Australia: Reflections, Experiences and Challenges”. The topic “Activism Doesn’t Pay” will be debated by a range of local activists including Cam Walker (Friends of... |

This DVD assists people to access advocacy and legal assistance from the Darwin Community Legal Service. It provides a pragmatic explanation aimed at Indigenous people and demystifies the process for gaining assistance. This DVD has proven popular with our remote clients and we hope to make it available in other Indigenous languages in the future. DCLS would welcome partnerships with other organisations to make this happen. |

The Disability Discrimination Act and Age Discrimination Act aim to protect particularly vulnerable people in our community. In this session, Marrickville Legal Centre explores how people may be treated less favourably on the grounds of a disability or their age in many areas of life, including employment and access to goods and services. The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) investigates complaints of discrimination and helps the parties to discuss resolution of complaints. This seminar informs participants about current issues in discrimination law, and shows them how to support clients who may have discrimination complaints and how complaints are resolved through conciliation. |

Based on the Victoria Legal Aid/Youthlaw booklet Am I Old Enough?, this quiz is a good icebreaker to convey the range of ways the law impacts young people's lives. In most cases it has been conducted as a 'call out' activity in a big group, with chocolates given for correct answers and discussion in between. It could also be run as a 'game show' or produced as a handout. |

Northern Rivers CLC held a community forum to gauge interest in animal welfare legal issues that resulted in the formation of the volunteer-based Animal Law & Education Project (ALEP). ALEP is comprised of lawyers, law students and animal carers and engages in community education and law reform activities. ALEP lobbied the local Southern Cross University Law School to offer an Animal Law unit over the summer semester. ALEP held a community forum on animal protection laws and partnered with Southern Cross University’s Animal Law unit academics to run the Animal Law Conference ‘The Road Ahead’, which addressed the shortfalls in legal protections for animals. The Illawarra Legal Centre collaborated with Wollongong TAFE students to host a lunch with a difference to mark anti-poverty week. A few students were pleasantly surprised when they were seated at the "banquet" table. However, many only received a small bowl of rice and had to look on! Everyone gained some insight into world poverty. |

Barwon Community Legal Service wanted to promote discussion and action about poverty in Australia and around the world. We marked Anti-Poverty Week 2010 by organising a free community BBQ at our local Salvation Army. People were given the opportunity to record concerns/issues that keep people in poverty and/or sign template letters relating to local issues. These letters were sent to local MPs and the event attracted local media. |

Anti-Terrorism Laws: A Guide for Community Lawyers (2008) was produced on behalf of the Anti-Terrorism Laws Working Group of the Federation of Community Legal Centres (Vic) Inc. It provides information for lawyers on federal and state laws enacted since 11 September 2001 to deal with ‘terrorist’ activity. The guide includes definitions of a terrorist act and a terrorist organisation and outlines the range of terrorist offences and other preventative measures introduced into the Criminal Code. It also discusses the counter-terrorism roles and powers of ASIO and the Australian Federal Police, as well as special police powers. A PDF version of this publication is available for download from Wester... |

The project developed a community legal education kit for Australian communities affected by the anti-terror laws. The kit focuses on aspects of the laws relevant to the everyday activities of domestic communities. In particular, it is intended to build the community members' knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities in relation to ASIO and the Australian Federal Police. The kit uses a train-the-trainer model, allowing for the delivery of legal education by recognised and trusted community leaders. |

Assets for Care recognises that lawyers can play an important role in identifying and preventing the financial abuse of older people. It also recognises that a lack of awareness and careless advice puts both lawyers and clients at risk, particularly where clients may be subject to undue influence.
