21. Aboriginal Wills Clinic

A wills clinic was held at the local Aboriginal Coop for local community members. Our service liaised with the coop and did extensive promotion in the local community. The Federation of CLC's had worked hard to assist RRR CLC's with partnering with law forms. Gilbert + Tobin from Sydney provided 2 lawyers pro-bono to deliver an education session and complete instructions for wills and powers of attorney. 15 community members were assisted to complete 45 documents.

In conjunction with Victoria Police, MMCLS held a community information night focussed on intervention orders and family violence. The session delivered by MMCLS focussed on social media, cyber-bullying and sexting as these had been flagged by VicPol as local issues which were related to intervention orders.

This resource kit aims to improve Yolŋu understanding of the dynamics of family violence using a unique metaphor developed in partnership with Yolŋu – traditional knowledge about the cycle of the seasons. The resources encourage people to reflect on what action they can take to keep their children and families safe. To celebrate Law Week this year we were out in our community offering free legal health checks and a shot in our blizzard machine to win instant prizes. A legal health check is a conversation starter to help people identify their legal problems and get help. There was an opportunity for community members to have a one–on–one chat with a legal professional and also take away resources to read at home. We ran six successful days of events in three locations, spending time at Bellarine Village in Newcomb, Colac Woolworths and Market Square in Geelong and spoke to over 1200 people.

On Saturday 12 November, Barwon Community Legal Service joined staff from Bethany Community Support, Diversitat, City of Greater Geelong and a bunch of young people to stop traffic in Geelong CBD between Market Square and Westfield Shopping Centres. The group surprised unassuming shoppers with a Flash Mob dance in the street that was aimed at raising awareness about respect and healthy relationships. This Flash Mob community campaign is one of many events being run as part of the Barwon Month of Action to Stop Men’s Violence Against Women. www.monthofaction.com.au
